What is self-confidence, and why is it important?

In essence, self-confidence is a resource that individuals can use to do tasks, communicate assertively, and trust in themselves. According to the American Psychological Association (n.d.), self-confidence is generally considered to have the same definition as self-assurance. This is the trust an individual holds to meet a task's requirements successfully. It is typically viewed as a positive attitude, and most of the time, individuals will work towards enhancing their confidence during therapy sessions.

Having high or positive self-esteem and confidence is vital for various reasons. Children who believe in their ability to do things may perform better in school and later in life regarding their occupations, and they may have higher job satisfaction during middle age (Ackerman, 2019). Healthy self-esteem can be attributed to positive thoughts about the self.

High self-esteem may also be attributed to the following:

  • Motivation
  • Positive outlook
  • Effective communication
  • Resilience
  • Positive influence on peers
  • Enhanced mental health
  • Career advancement

Self-confidence can be worked on throughout one's life. It's important to remember that working on an individual's self-confidence can be achieved by many people. Professionals who interact with children frequently will be constantly building new ways to support them in unlocking new areas of their self-worth and esteem.

What does it mean to have low self-confidence?

A few different behaviors can characterize low self-confidence. When an individual may have self-esteem issues, here are a few behaviors that individuals who realize they are suffering might display:

Negative self-talk

Individuals with low self-esteem may exhibit negative thoughts such as constantly critiquing themselves, doubting their abilities, and focusing on their shortcomings. This unhelpful thinking style leads to a vicious circle of negative self-evaluations.

Comparison with others

Low self-confidence can also push individuals to compare themselves to others constantly. Whether the individual desires to do something different in their life because of others or if the individual emphasizes that they are falling behind their peers because they live differently. This can impact an individual into thinking they aren't good enough. Having these negative beliefs also contributes to the cycle of self-esteem.

Perfectionism

Perfectionistic tendencies may occur when individuals with low self-confidence set impossibly high goals. They may constantly feel dissatisfied with their performance, even when they achieve success.

Avoiding social situations

This can incorporate a few different factors of low self-esteem. If people constantly compare themselves to others, they may not want to attend social gatherings. Low self-esteem can sometimes even lead to social anxiety and a reluctance to engage in social activities. This can ultimately lead to social isolation.

What can cause adults to have low self-confidence?

Other disorders from various experiences can impact an adult's self-confidence levels. Here are a few different reasons why individuals might have low self-esteem:

  • Negative past experiences
  • Negative core beliefs
  • Critical self-perception
  • Comparisons to others
  • Lack of positive feedback
  • Unrealistic standards
  • Traumatic experiences
  • Social expectations
  • Perfectionism

It's important to remember that every individual is different. There will be clients with different challenges within the world and themselves that they must recognize. As a therapist, it is a large responsibility to encourage them to be confident and feel good about their relationships, behavior, personality, and themselves.

What problems can low self-confidence lead to in adults?

Low self-esteem can contribute to a range of issues for adults if not supported early on. Here is a list of a few items that low self-confidence can impact in adulthood:

  • Limited career advancement
  • Difficulty in relationships
  • Social isolation
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Perfectionism
  • Procrastination
  • Limited goal achievement
  • Negative impact on mental health

From this list, you can see that self-confidence can enormously impact an individual. This is why it is crucial to put in extra support for those showing signs of low self-confidence.

What are self-confidence worksheets?

Self-confidence worksheets are tools specifically designed to help individuals enhance their self-esteem. Different types of self-confidence worksheets include various activities, exercises, prompts, and questions that can guide the client through self-reflection.

In this worksheet specifically, we focus more on reflection. Things include looking into the future about what the individual wants to experience, identifying individuals who love and support them, their best personal qualities, and thinking about their current state of mind.

Self-confidence worksheets can be a practical resource to promote self-esteem, exercise awareness, positive thinking, and personal development. They can be used in conjunction with other therapy types as well as be introduced if you recognize any form of negative or low self-esteem within the sessions. It works great in conjunction with self-esteem exercises, too.

The great thing about this self-confidence worksheet is that it allows individuals to complete it independently. This means that instead of feeling rushed when set as a homework task, the client has more time to engage with their thoughts, feelings, emotions, and perceived self-esteem.
