What is a Rokeach Values Survey?

The Rockeach Values Survey (RVS) is a well-known tool in the field of social psychology, created by social psychologist Milton Rokeach. This survey is designed to explore and understand human values, offering insights into the guiding principles that individuals consider important in their lives. The Rokeach Values Survey encompasses both instrumental values and terminal values.

Instrumental values refer to desirable modes of behavior and represent the means to achieve various end states of existence. These values are the preferable modes, or preferred ways individuals choose to lead their lives, reflecting personal development and consistent success. Examples of instrumental value include self-awareness, a comfortable life, and a motivating achievement orientation in work-related behavior.

Terminal values, on the other hand, refer to end states of existence or fundamental values that individuals aspire to achieve over their lifetime. These terminal values represent the desirable qualities that people believe are crucial in shaping their lives. Examples include an exciting life, social justice, and a sense of accomplishment.

The Rokeach Values Survey is a powerful tool created to understand the nature of human values across different groups, cultures, and individuals. It utilizes rank-order scaling to identify the importance of specific values to an individual, providing a comprehensive view of their underlying structure. The rokeach value survey has been used by graduate students, career counselors, and researchers to explore the diversity of values and beliefs that shape human behavior and decision-making. Through multiple interpretations and systematic analysis, the Rokeach Values Survey contributes to a deeper understanding the nature of human values, the philosophical basis of beliefs attitudes and values, and their impact on various aspects of life.
