What is the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Test (MOCA)?
Cognitive decline is a common phenomenon as people age and can lead to changes in mental functioning that can affect an individual's quality of life. It can present itself in different ways, such as reduced memory function, difficulty concentrating and focusing, slower reaction time, impaired judgment and problem-solving skills, and even changes in language abilities. It can also lead to a reduction in social engagement and participation.
The is one of the most commonly used tests to measure and track cognitive decline. Developed by Dr. Ziad Nasreddine in the 1990s, the MOCA Test helps detect mild cognitive impairment and other conditions that can affect cognitive functioning.
It consists of questions and tasks that test a person's short-term memory, orientation to time and place, language, abstraction capabilities, attention span, problem-solving, and visual-spatial abilities. Administered by healthcare professionals, it typically takes about 10 to 15 minutes and has a maximum score of 30.
It's important to note that this tool is NOT designed to provide a definitive diagnosis but rather aid in detecting mild cognitive impairment and other conditions that may warrant further in-depth evaluation.

MOCA Test Scoring
The MOCA Test consists of various tasks and questions that measure a person's cognitive functioning. Each task or question is given a score, which totals up to 30 points. A score of 26 or higher is generally considered within the normal cognitive function. In contrast, a score of 25 or lower may indicate mild cognitive impairment and warrant further in-depth assessment.
Note that the cutoff score may vary depending on various factors such as age, education level, and cultural background. It's important to consider the patient's circumstances when interpreting their results.
