Clinical information

  • Lymphedema is when areas or parts of the body swell due to lymphatic obstruction caused by fluid build-up due to damage in the lymphatic system. It emerges if the lymph nodes are unable to filter substances traveling via the lymphatic vessels and lymph fluid.
  • Lymphedema is usually caused by cancer or its treatment. Some common causes are a cancerous tumor, surgery to remove the cancer, and radiation to treat the cancer.
  • Symptoms of lymphedema are swelling in a specific part of the body, a tight/tingling sensation of the skin, the affected limb feeling heavy, leathery/thick skin, and accessories or clothes feeling tighter even if you haven't gained weight.
  • Varicose veins and vein disorders may emerge alongside it.
  • Usually, lymphedema is described by stages, and the severity of the swelling differentiates one stage from another.
  • A practitioner will conduct an interview, measure to compare the affected limb with the unaffected limb, and have the patient undergo lymphoscintigraphy and imaging tests to diagnose lymphedema.
  • Though there is currently no cure for lymphedema, treatments are still being offered to reduce the swelling. Some medicines are compression sleeves/stockings, exercise, massage therapy, weight loss, surgery, and cancer treatment if a malignant tumor is the cause.
