Z02.89 Diagnosis Code: Encounter for other administrative examinations

The ICD-10 Z02.89 diagnosis code designates Encounter for other administrative examinations.

This code will be used on patients who attend appointments to evaluate people for administrative or regulatory purposes. They’re not necessarily meant to diagnose people with medical conditions.

An example of an administrative examination is getting a medical evaluation for getting a driver’s license. Some medical problems may affect a person’s ability to drive properly and safely.

Please note that this code has been officially replaced with Z02.84 - Encounter for child welfare exam. It’s meant for checking different aspects of a child on welfare, like getting proper care and attention, to check if they’re suitable for prospective foster parents, etc.

Please note that these codes are not valid as principal diagnoses because they specify that the patient attended an encounter for a particular administrative examination.

Is Z02.89 billable?

Before it was replaced, yes, it was valid and billable. The code that replaced it is also valid and billable.
