Clinical Information

• Premature ventricular contractions or PVCs are abnormal heartbeat or arrhythmia. It happens when the person’s heart gets a signal from a different area of the heart - the Purkinje fibers from the ventricle - instead of the right atrium. This results in contracting the ventricle and delaying the next heartbeat. 
• Individuals with PVCs usually never experience symptoms. If they do, they are any of the following: chest pain, lightheadedness, anxiety, and shortness of breath. 
• Causes may be medical conditions like hypertension, cardiomyopathy, myocardial infarction, and hyperthyroidism. It’s also possible that substance abuse, anxiety, excess caffeine, lack of sleep, or irregular electrolyte levels cause or increase one’s risk of having PVCs. 
• Usually, one discovers PVC when a practitioner spots them on an ECG or Holter monitor. 
• Practitioners only treat people with PVCs if they’re exhibiting symptoms. 
• Treatments may include medication or radiofrequency catheter ablation.
