What ICD-10 codes are used for flu-like symptoms?

The term "flu-like symptoms" is broad, covering various conditions. Here are some typical Flu Like Symptoms ICD Codes:

J10.1 - Influenza due to other identified influenza virus with other respiratory manifestations

Used when a patient is diagnosed with influenza caused by a specific, identified influenza virus (other than novel influenza virus), and exhibits additional respiratory symptoms or complications beyond the typical flu-like symptoms. These respiratory manifestations may include bronchitis, pneumonia, or other respiratory disorders directly associated with the influenza virus.

J11.1 - Influenza due to unidentified influenza virus with other respiratory manifestations

The main difference between the first one is that this code is used when the specific influenza virus causing the infection cannot be identified. The patient presents with flu-like symptoms and additional respiratory manifestations, but the virus responsible for the infection is not determined or is not tested for.

J11.8 - Influenza due to unidentified influenza virus with other manifestations

Similar to J11.1, this code is used when the specific influenza virus causing the infection cannot be identified. However, the patient may exhibit manifestations beyond just respiratory symptoms in this case. These additional manifestations could include non-respiratory symptoms such as gastrointestinal issues, neurological symptoms, or other systemic manifestations associated with the flu.

Please note this is no longer valid and billable. Please J11.81 (with encephalopathy), J11.82 (with myocarditis), J11.83 (with otitis media), and J11.89 (with other manifestations).

J10.2 - Influenza due to other identified influenza virus with gastrointestinal manifestations

This code is used when a patient is diagnosed with influenza caused by a specific, identified influenza virus (other than novel influenza virus), and experiences gastrointestinal symptoms or complications in addition to typical flu-like symptoms. Gastrointestinal manifestations may include symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain.

J11.2 - Influenza due to unidentified influenza virus with gastrointestinal manifestations

Similar to J10.2, this code is used when the specific influenza virus causing the infection cannot be identified, but the patient presents with gastrointestinal symptoms in addition to flu-like symptoms. The gastrointestinal symptoms may be prominent and require medical attention and supportive flu care.

Which flu like symptoms ICD codes are billable?

All of the aforementioned flu like symptoms ICD-10-CM codes are valid and billable except for J11.8.
