Clinical information

  • Sacral wounds, also known as sacral ulcers, are skin injuries in the body's sacral region, near the lower back and spine. It's considered a pressure sore, also known as a bed sore.
  • Patients who have low mobility, have excessive moisture in the sacral area, have the area exposed to friction often, or have a poor diet are at risk of developing sacral wounds.
  • There are four stages of sacral wounds, each showing a worsening severity, and treatment depends on what stage the wound is at. Treatment includes cleaning and scheduled rotation or movement if the wound is at Stage 1 or 2. However, if the wound is at stage 3, surgery is highly recommended to treat the wound cause it is highly susceptible to skin infections.
