What is Life Review Therapy?
Life Review Therapy helps individuals reflect on their life stories — the highs, lows, and everything in between. By exploring life themes and significant moments, they can gain new perspectives, improve life quality, and find meaning in their experiences. This approach primarily benefits older adults and palliative care patients, guiding them to process past conflicts, negative events, and present circumstances. Through structured sessions, clients revisit key experiences, addressing psychological distress while considering their physical health.
Life Review Therapy focuses on providing a space for individuals to celebrate achievements, reconcile regrets, and develop greater self-acceptance. Life Review Therapy and other therapeutic techniques can help clients find peace with past events and build a more positive outlook on the future. For example, Life Review Therapy combined with memory specificity training (MST) is used to enhance ego integrity and reduce despair in cancer patients receiving palliative care. This approach appears effective for supporting cancer patients in finding meaning, processing life experiences, and fostering a greater sense of ego integrity (Kleijn et al., 2018).
