What is a Stages of Grief Worksheet?

The stages of grief, as proposed by psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, represent a framework for understanding the emotional journey of individuals grappling with loss. Comprising five stages—Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance - this model illustrates that grief isn't a linear process but a personal and unique experience with potential overlaps between stages.

The Denial stage is a defense mechanism, often marked by disbelief or numbness, as individuals struggle to absorb the reality of the loss. During the Anger stage, the masking effects of denial fade, and truth and pain resurface, often redirected and expressed as anger. The anger could be towards inanimate objects, strangers, friends, or loved ones.

Individuals in the Bargaining stage attempt to minimize the loss by appealing to a higher power or authority for a reprieve. This is an instinctive reaction to replace what has been lost with something that feels familiar, safe, and secure. Moreover, sadness and grief take over the individual's life as reality sets in. The Depression stage is marked by helplessness and hopelessness, often accompanied by physical fatigue or exhaustion.

Finally, the journey through grief culminates in the Acceptance stage, where individuals can begin to move forward and find meaning again. While this doesn’t mean the pain has gone away completely, it does mean that individuals can accept the loss and begin to heal.

Mental health professionals may use a to help clients understand their journey through this process. This worksheet helps individuals recognize their stage and the associated emotions involved in each phase of grief. It also helps individuals work through their feelings, allowing them to move forward and heal.
