Clinical information

  • Bradycardia, a type of arrhythmia, happens when the heart beats less than 60 beats per minute. It's a circulatory system problem.
  • Depending on the patient, they may not experience any symptoms or may experience any of the following: fainting, disturbed sleeping, fatigue/weakness, and dizziness.
  • There are several causes of bradycardia. Among them are reactions to a medication, age, heart conditions, sick sinus syndrome, heart block, intracranial pressure, heart attack, hypothyroidism, hypoxia, hypothermia, and obstructive sleep apnea.
  • Bradycardia can also be caused by taking certain drugs, so if that's the case, healthcare providers will seek to identify drugs used by their patient to determine the specific cause.
  • A practitioner may check the patient's heart with an ECG or EKG to diagnose bradycardia. The practitioner may also ask the patient to wear a portable ECG, like a Holter monitor, event monitor, or implantable monitor, to keep an eye on one's BPM outside the hospital or clinic.
  • Treatment may vary depending on the cause however, common ones include medication and a pacemaker. If it's happening during labor, obstetric surgery might be important.
