There are numerous ways to read a bodygraph chart depending on the healthcare field you’re in. However, the easiest way to read a body chart is to scan from top to bottom, left to right, and focus on one body area at a time. Sometimes patients can be dealing with a multitude of physical healthcare issues all at once, which can be overwhelming to look at on a page. To avoid this, don’t think about the diagram in its entirety, and instead, visually break it down.

Every practitioner will approach this differently, and some do have their own standardized notation processes. To ensure you’re being accurate with your charting, it may be helpful to do some light research on your specialty and familiarize yourself with these processes. However, most bodygraphs include a key that outlines what each line and shape mean. This is immensely useful, and if you don’t follow any particular notation guidelines in your profession, make sure to double-check that you include a key for greater comprehension. Use different lines and styles to represent pain, tenderness, and other factors, as well as labels to identify problem areas specifically.

A bodygraph, or body chart, in this context, is typically used by a variety of healthcare professionals to help with visualization of physical health problems and is an important component of practices such as physical therapy.
